So Sew! Week 3 Project: Under the Big Top Tank

Well Good Morning! And happy Friday! Do you have any fun plans for this weekend? Frit and I are hanging out with her sisters and mom tonight and tomorrow while the men are off hunting. We’ve got dinner at (our favorite) Sego Lily Cafe tonight and then a Zumba class, brunch, and an afternoon matinee planned for tomorrow. Methinks I’m going to fall in love with Zumba.

But anyhow! Welcome to any new visitors who found me through Good Things Utah. If you’re interested in having me make your child’s monster, just send me an email and I’ll get you more details. If you’re interested in watching any of my other segments for Good Things Utah, click here. And finally, all Halloween Trick-or-Treat bags will be on sale next week in my shop for $5. Just sign up on the mailing list (over there on the right, near the top) to get the discount code.

And now for my So Sew! Challenge Week 3 project. If you recall, the inspiration word was CIRCUS…. As I was thinking about what I wanted to make, I came across a vintage paper doll playbook, circa 1980, starring Raggedy Ann and Andy.

Inside it’s filled with all sorts of circus-y goodies and darling illustrations, but the page that caught my eye was the one with a red and white striped Big Top Circus Tent. As soon as I saw it, I knew what I wanted to sew.

And so … here’s my project. My “Under the Big Top Tank.”

I used a red & white striped polyester fabric and a simple McCalls pattern. As I began sewing I got a little worried it looked a little pirate-y, but I think the bow and biased neck binding help alleviate that.

And I’m not sure yet, but I think I might want to redo the bow. Bigger and floppier. ???

What do you think? Either way … I’m super happy with it. And I think it’s pretty darn cute if I do say so!

Be sure to check out Melissa and Sandi‘s fantastic projects! And stop by the Flickr pool to see what other readers have been working on this week. And don’t forget to tune in on Monday for the new inspiration word and our final week of the So Sew! Challenge.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Seamstress for Hire: 5 Bridesmaid Dresses Complete

A couple months ago a darling bride (Kate) hired me to sew her five bridesmaids’ dresses. Well. The dresses are d.u.n. And I’m super pleased with how they turned out. The girls looked so darling in them and the colors just make me happy.

Kate: I hope your wedding weekend is sunny and beautiful and that your life with Garrett is full of joy and love.

Next project: Miss Ella’s Baptism Dress…which I’m super excited about since I’m not only sewing it, I’m designing it! Sketches to follow soon.

If I Had a Love [Part 3]: A Collection of Valentine’s Day Ideas

[Part 1]: Garlands

[Part 2]: Table Centerpiece

[Part 4]: Music

If I had a love, I would dress the table for Valentine’s Day like so.

I still need to add napkins and candles (of course).

And then, I would also set out a Valentine’s Day candy counter. Have I told you I love Valentine’s Day candy? [wink] Just kiddin’. I have. Like 10 bazzillion times already. And if you’re going to leave a comment, you should tell me how awesome I am that I didn’t eat one piece of it. Cuz you know I’m off sugar. L to R: chewy pink grapefruit sours, strawberry taffy, cherry gummy hearts, peanut butter m&m’s (in the pink striped bowl), old fashioned peppermint sticks. But you can use any candy you love if you want to create a similar offering. Just choose candy colors that match your scheme.

*All items used in the table dressing and candy counter were scavenged from closets, toy bins, linen closets, kitchen cupboards, and the thrift store (1 vase, 1 martini glass, & 1 stemmed goblet  for a total of $2.25). To create a similar setting, just look around your house! You’ll be amazed at what you can find. Simply choose a color scheme and go from room to room. Grab anything that falls into the scheme, even if you don’t think it will match anything else. Often, those pieces make the best combos. And have fun with it!

If I had a love, I would make garlands by the mile and string them from every corner of my ceiling.

*To make the heart garland, just follow the tutorial I posted for the felt garlands last month. But use paper instead of felt. Go here for a tutorial on the pom-pom garland, and here for the lollie garland. Have fun!

Waiting

Photobucket

This is Me. Waiting for the train. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized I seem to always be waiting. Waiting for the train every morning. Waiting for 5:00 and the work day to end. Waiting for my turn. Waiting for love. Waiting for the right moment to make my next move. Waiting to know what that next move is.

Maybe it’s time to stop waiting.
