Song For Saturday [Folka Dots, I Don't Mind]

Remember last weekend when I had a bunch of photo shoots and birthday parties and I didn’t know if I’d get to it all? Well. I did. I got to all of it. And it was such a great Saturday–a Saturday that ended with a house concert at cJane‘s, whose birthday happens to be exactly one week after mine. The Folka Dots played and I loved it. I really did. Live music + atmosphere = does it for me every time. (As did the platter of Brie slathered in something akin to honey and walnuts. I basically set up camp by the cheese and crackers, if you  must know.)

They even sang Happy Birthday to us March babies (Mindy‘s birthday is smack dab in the middle of mine and Courtney’s. And don’t ask me who the girl on the far right is.) Mindy said, later in the evening, after the show had ended, and we settled in to visit, “I can spot a Pisces from anywhere.” And I would have to agree. Quite a dreamy breed, we are.

But before the night ended, the Dots sang this delicious tune, which Christopher luckily caught on camera, and which makes me want to run away with a farmer and buy a little cabin on the plains, and be his for always. Dreamy indeed.

Song for Saturday [Mindy Gledhill, Winter Moon] + HOUSE CONCERT!!!

We might have gone overboard on the pies. We might’ve.

There was my pecan and sugar cream. Plus two pumpkins. Plus a lemon sour cream. And a chocolate cream.

Quite honestly, there was more pie per capita than Thanksgiving turkey. But by golly, come Friday morning, I was sure glad to be greeted by a gratuitous slice of leftover pecan for breakfast. Fav.o.rite.

After morning pie (akin to morning to prayer), we traipsed up the mountainside, like we do every year, looking for the perfect tree. Oddly (gratefully) it wasn’t very cold with only a light, snowy mist in the air.

We weaved in and out of the firs and evergreens, up this way and then back that way, when quite fortuitously, and rather quickly (compared to years past), we found her. The perfect mix of whimsy, fullness, and Charlie Brown.

And just like that, Christmas had begun. Hip! Hip!

In honor of the newly opened yuletide season, I wanted to share the music video debut of “Winter Moon” by my friend, indie-singer/songwriter Mindy Gledhill. She just released a Christmas album, of the same title, and I’m in love love love with the whole darn thing. The collection, to me, is reminiscent of simple Christmases, dreamy and playful, with hints of delightful quirkiness. Her rendition of “Christmas Waltz” (Track 2) is hands down, my new favorite Christmas song. I had it on repeat for, oh, 2 hours or so last night. So I am quite confident when I say that I think this should be your 2011 Christmas CD purchase.

Find the album here (hard copy, on sale for $11.24 today) and here (iTunes, $9.99).

And if getting to share the music video wasn’t exciting enough! I have a copy of Winter Moon to giveaway to one of my readers! Just leave a comment below telling me your Christmas wish and I’ll randomly draw the winner next Friday night. ***This GIVEAWAY has ended: The winner is Brenda Taylor! Congrats Brenda!

Oh, but there’s more! I’m hosting a private house concert featuring Mindy and her stellar band (who are flying in all the way from LA for the show!) on Monday, December 12 at 8:00 p.m. You’re coming right?! The artist donation fee is $10 until December 12, or $15 at the door.

I’m over-the-Winter-Moon excited about this concert and am already scheming-dreaming the decorations and refreshments! Oh, how I hope you can come. If you have any questions, send me an email.

Now without further adieu, may I present Mindy Gledhill (+ a few surprise guests) singing the title track of her new album “Winter Moon” …

Roadtrippin’ with Mindy Gledhill: Our Southern Idaho Tour

There are some people in my life that I would do just about anything for. Mindy is one of those people. So when she called last week and said, “can you?!” I said, “most definitely!” It was only two days away, but I’d move hell and high water (or is it hill and high water? I never know.) to road-trip it with MG. And though I’m constantly reminded of my un-cool-ness when I’m with her (She really is so much cooler than me. I mean hello. I still use the word “cool”.), she makes me laugh and feel creative and I find my dreams growing wings just from being around her. I feel so lucky that I can call her friend.

I went as “manager,” which means I was the go-to for publicity, set up, travel & lodging, venue contacts, all tour/show related questions/needs, etc. and just generally kept things running smoothly. The key to being a good manager/publicist? Think ahead. Imagine every possible scenario for how things will go (good and bad) and have solutions at the ready for all of them. And then everyone will love you. And everyone will be happy.

So the tour started off in Rexburg, Idaho in the Kirkham Auditorium which we totally sold out the day before the concert. Hello 1,000 screaming fans and a standby line that wrapped around the building! Awesome–is an understatement.

I’ve been with Mindy since she debuted her first album seven years ago. I’ve seen her shows; I’ve seen the audiences. And I can say, unequivocally, that this was my favorite show ever. The band rocked. Mindy rocked. And the crowd–mm hm–rocked. Oh and the orchestra! Did I leave out that detail? Yes. Mindy and her band were backed by the fantastic Teton Chamber Orchestra. And they too–you guessed it–rocked. I mean … as much as an orchestra can “rock.”

It is so fulfilling to help make a live show (that I also happen to personally love and adore) come together and then have an audience come to it that boomerangs the energy pouring off the stage right back up up there. And I’ve said this before, but Mindy’s music makes me so happy. Like I’m dancing on clouds. It was such a fun night.

Guitarist, Joe Corcoran, was incredible–what a talented musician. I was in awe. He was the guitarist who actually recorded on the album and came up from LA to play these shows.

Andrew Burton was on bass and might just be one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. Not to mention a fantastic bassist.

And Jay Tibbitts, our drummer, is, to quote myself “one of the best drummers I’ve seen in a long time.” And, as I’m sure you can see in the pictures below, he’s absolutely darling. If he were like, oh, ten years older, I might’ve gotten a wicked crush on him this weekend. But as it stands, I think I’ll just be the president of his fan club. (He’s also the drummer for Parlor Hawk–another band definitely worth checking out.)

After Rexburg, we were bound for Idaho Falls to set up for another show of 1,000. And it was just as fun the second time as it was the first.

It was all pretty whirlwind (as tours usually are) and I was beat by the time we got home, but such a stellar way to spend a weekend.

Last Minute (Do You Live in Idaho?)

(Last night’s sound check and rehearsal)

I got a last minute call yesterday to come manage Mindy Gledhill‘s two Idaho concerts this weekend. Um…lemme think about that…yes PLEASE!

Tonight we’re in Rexburg for a show at the Kirkham Auditorium where Mindy will be backed by her band and the Teton Chamber Orchestra. Let me tell you … it sounds pretty cool! And tomorrow we’ll be in Idaho Falls at the Civic. So if you’re up here, come! And please do come say hello! (Concert Details & Tickets Here)

p.s. her drummer also plays in Parlor Hawk, who were featured on iTunes Best of 2010 Indie Spotlight. Check ‘em out.

p.p.s. and her guitarist engineered for the Dave Matthews Band & Lenka.

p.p.p.s. You really ought to come tonight or tomorrow if you can!

Like I’m On a Merry-Go-Round

Did you know that one of my consulting clients is independent singer/songwriter Mindy Gledhill? It’s true. We met in 2004 … she, a recording artist and I, the PR Director at the record label she was signed to. Her debut CD was my very first project at my very first grown up job after college. We became friends–dear friends–in addition to being colleagues. Eventually she left the label to do her own thing, her own way. And then a couple more years after that … well, that was when the label told me to leave (remember that?), and I too have since been able to do my own thing, my own way.

Mindy is releasing a new CD in 7 days. We’re launching it at a release concert in Provo, Utah on Monday, August 2 and will then be touring throughout the Fall (schedule to come). To say I love this CD is an understatement. I’ve been listening to it non-stop since she emailed me the finished mixes. For the last two weeks I’ve been up to my ears in press releases, marketing plans, PR pitches, and concert details. But at the center of all of it is this CD. This CD that I can’t get enough of. This CD that I described for the catalogs as follows:

Award-winning artist, Mindy Gledhill has truly come into her own with her latest release, Anchor, a bubbly CD with undeniably catchy tunes. Laced with color, charm, and vintage flair, this playful collection of songs also includes the much-requested “All About Your Heart.”  Produced by Stuart Brawley (acclaimed producer/engineer for artists like Michael Jackson, Lenka, and Celine Dion), Anchor reminds listeners that life is sweet and full of wonder.

But it’s more than that. For me at least. A few nights ago, I was working late and emailed Mindy to say this:

Mindy,

Am working on the album description and the new bio…

Am listening to the album *again* to get the juice flowing …

And am realizing why I love this CD so much.

It is this …

It’s because it makes me feel like I’m on the edge of a merry-go-round with my head tilted back toward the sky, my hair flying as I spin round and round and round with nary a care and nothing to do but smile and laugh and let go. It’s because it’s everything I want to feel towards “him.” Whomever “he” is. Wherever “he” is. And someday, when I find him, or he finds me, I’m going to walk up to him and give him this CD, tied up with a bright, happy balloon, a cloud of cotton-candy and a big fat kiss, and tell him: “This is what I feel. About you. It’s what I’ve always felt. Even when I didn’t know you.”

(And of course I’ll be wearing a dress you picked out for me.)

Just thought you should know.

OK. Back to work.

Love,

Krista

You need this CD. You do. And you can get it at the release concert next Monday or online (MindyGledhill.com or iTunes) beginning next Wednesday.

And if you’d like to see a couple impromptu music videos for two of the songs, go here (I love this little girl and want to have 7 little girls just like her when I grow up.) and here.

Hope your week has started of splendidly!
